Unusual Friendships: A Little Black Cat and a Little White Rat
Ever wonder what my inspiration was for Unusual Friendships?
One night at the cottage, I was watching Buddy, one of our cats. He was just outside the sliding glass door, jumping up at the moths attracted to the light from our bedroom. He’s black with a white crest on his chest and he has four white paws. In the outside darkness, all I could see were his four white paws. He looked like he was doing a jig. And then a story began . . . “a little white crest which he wore on his chest.” I thought of Dad who had played the fiddle. Everything came out in rhyme. Even when I wasn’t’ working on that book, I began thinking in rhyme. When he got startled, Buddy would jump about three feet straight up in the air. None of our other cats ever did that. Today he’s almost 14 and he now has a grey mustache. And he always seems like such a little gentleman. Someday, I might tell his story.
